Mid-Scotland and Fife MSP Murdo Fraser has attended a Scottish Parliament Social Tourism briefing led by John Mason MSP on the benefits of social tourism.
The Family Holiday Association is a leading charity that helps disadvantaged families access breaks away from home. They help over 2,000 families, some 9,000 individuals, from Scotland and the rest of the UK, enjoy some quality time together every year. The charity believes that families that holiday together are happier and healthier, making for a stronger society.
Commenting Murdo Fraser MSP said:
“I was pleased to support this issue as the Family Holiday Association has worked hard to give disadvantaged families short holidays that previously would not have been available.
“However, social tourism is not an altogether new concept, back in the early twentieth century church groups would often take youngsters to the seaside in cases where their parents couldn’t afford the cost.
“Stress often affects those employed in low wage jobs and the health benefits of short breaks away are well documented. Nottingham University research shows that 77% of families were happier after a holiday, 70% were more optimistic and 74% had a more positive outlook on life.
“Hopefully the Family Holiday Association can continue with their great work, and I intend to offer support, where appropriate, in parliament.”
