Mid-Scotland and Fife MSP, Liz Smith, has been crowned a Scottish Sports Champion by the Scottish Sports Association.
Liz is currently President of the Scottish Women’s Cricket Association and played internationally for Scotland in the early 2000’s.
In the lead up to May’s Scottish elections, Liz signed up to the SSA’s Vote for Sport campaign and has previously worked with the SSA on their #whysportmatters campaign.
Commenting Liz Smith MSP said:
“Throughout my life I have played or been involved in sport and it is a real honour to be named as a Scottish Sporting Champion.
“Sport is central to Scottish society and helps shape our culture and national outlook. Taking part in sport, regardless of age or gender, is incredibly important as we seek to prevent health issues caused as a result of inactivity.
“It is important that children are encouraged into sport from an early age and I would welcome the thousands of partnerships the Scottish Sports Association have established with sports clubs, many of which are in the Mid-Scotland and Fife region.
“With news that the Commonwealth Games has failed to establish a significant shift in increasing physical activity it is important that the SSA is supported in their #whysportmatters campaign.”
Kim Atkinson CEO of Scottish Sports Association said:
“We are delighted to welcome Liz Smith as a Scottish Sporting Champion. We hope that Liz can help us raise the importance of sport and for the vital work of our members to continue to be recognised and prioritised throughout this parliamentary term.
“Almost one fifth of the Scottish population is a member of one of 13,000 sports clubs. We are delighted that as a Scottish Sporting Champion, Liz Smith, can help us provide an opportunity for this enormous community of interest to be appropriately recognised and to have a voice in Holyrood as we all continue to work in partnership to truly deliver a world class sporting system for everyone in Scotland.”
