PROTECT LOCAL HISTORIC BATTLEFIELD SITES Mid-Scotland & Fife Conservative MSP Murdo Fraser wants to see the historic battlefields at Dunkeld and Tippermuir by Perth protected and included in Historic Scotland’s Inventory of Historic Battlefields. The call comes as Historic Scotland launch a consultation on the 18th May to consider their inclusion in the inventory. The Battle of Tippermuir took place on 1st September 1644, three miles outside of Perth which saw the outnumbered 1st Marquis of Montrose defeat the Covenanters during the Wars of the Three Kingdoms. The Battle of Dunkeld, on 21st August 1689, saw the Government regiment of Covenanters defeat Jacobite clans in the streets surrounding Dunkeld Cathedral. The proposed inclusion of the Battles of Dunkeld and Tippermuir on the Inventory will be available for public consultation at www.historic-scotland.gov.uk/battlefieldconsultation between 18 May and 30 June 2012. There are currently 28 battlefields on the Inventory. Murdo Fraser led a successful campaign to include the Bannockburn battlefield site in the inventory when it was first being drawn up, having lodged a parliamentary motion in the Scottish Parliament that attracted cross-party support. Murdo Fraser said: “I want to see historic battlefields in Perth & Kinross included in the Inventory of Historic Battlefields so that they will be protected for the future and so that more can be done to remember these important historic battles on our local soil. “The Battle of Tippermuir and the Battle of Dunkeld both were instrumental in forging Scotland’s and the United Kingdom’s present day. We must remember the significance of these battles which took place in Perthshire as well as remember the men who fought and died here. “I hope that people in Perthshire support the inclusion of these battlefields in Historic Scotland’s Inventory of Historic Battlefields and will act as a catalyst to help preserve and promote Perth & Kinross’s history.”
