The population of Perth and Kinross is expected to increase by over 24% during the next 23 years according to projections from the Office for National Statistics. In Scotland only Edinburgh and Aberdeen are predicted to grow faster over the next quarter century.
Mid-Scotland and Fife MSP Murdo Fraser believes that these results are good news for Perth and Kinross and illustrate the strength of Perth in attracting jobs and investment. However, the Conservative MSP also cautioned that without Scottish Government support in providing digital and physical infrastructure the region could fail to live up to growth predictions.
By 2037 Scotland is expected to grow by 9% taking the population close to 6 million.
According to the report there will also be a large increase in the number of people of working age in Perth and Kinross (21%), whilst the number of pensioners will stay relatively stable.
Commenting Murdo Fraser MSP said:
“Whilst only projections, these statistics are indicative of Perth and Kinross’ strong future. The area is an extremely desirable place to live and it is no surprise to see forecasters predicting such a significant population boom.
“Since gaining city status Perth has grown its reputation as a centre for business and commerce and many small and large companies are relocating to the area.
“However, this bright future can only happen if the Scottish Government gives the region the tools to facilitate growth. Digital infrastructure must improve, this means faster internet and more reliable mobile communications. Physical infrastructure must also improve and public transport links to the Central Belt must be faster and more frequent.”
