If Scotland votes Yes to independence in September the Queen should be dropped as head of state: that's the message that will come out of a republican conference to be held this weekend in Edinburgh.
The conference comes following calls by SNP Cabinet Secretary for Justice, Kenny MacAskill for a referendum on keeping the Queen as Head of State should Scotland separate from the United Kingdom.
Liz Smith, Scottish Conservative MSP for Mid Scotland & Fife said:
“The Yes campaign mask seems to have slipped this weekend as we see the true face of what an independent Scotland would look like; one where the SNP would scrap the Queen as Head of State and build a high-tax republic of Scotland with President Alex Salmond.
“The Royal Family are highly regarded in Scotland with polling showing that a constant 80 per cent of the public want to retain the Queen as Head of State.
“Voters across Scotland are concerned that a Yes vote could threaten the future of the monarchy in Scotland and the strong ties which have helped to build co-operation and peace across our nations for hundreds of years.
“This conference will only help to highlight how out of touch the Yes and SNP campaign is with the true views of the people of Scotland.”
