Liz Smith, Scottish Conservative MSP for Mid Scotland & Fife has tabled a Motion in the Scottish Parliament to welcome the decision by UNESCO to award world heritage status to the Forth Bridge.
Liz Smith, Scottish Conservative MSP for Mid Scotland & Fife said:
“It is great news that UNESCO has awarded world heritage status to the Forth Bridge, which now means that the iconic bridge, which opened in 1890 after eight years of construction, is now recognised alongside Egypt’s pyramids, the Great Wall of China and the Sydney Opera House in terms of cultural significance.
“The Forth Bridge is the sixth Scottish landmark to be awarded such status, joining New Lanark, St Kilda, the old and new towns in Edinburgh, Neolithic Orkney and the Antonine Wall as part of 29 such sites across the UK.
“In recent months there has been talk about how the public will be able to visit the bridge and the opportunity for the Forth Bridge to become a visitor attraction with the proposed construction of a visitor centre and viewing platform. I hope that the awarding of World Heritage Site Status to the Forth Bridge will help to promote Scotland’s great engineering heritage as well as the Scottish architects and designers of tomorrow.
“2016 is the Year of Innovation, Architecture and Design, and I hope that the Forth Bridge will continue to be a great example of British architecture and design and a symbol of Scotland’s engineering heritage.”
