Visit Scotland has confirmed in writing to Murdo Fraser MSP that the locations used in the current Outlander TV series are not permitted to publicise their involvement as per an agreement with the show’s producers. The MSP had asked Visit Scotland why Doune Castle was excluded from their interactive online map of “Outlander” locations, concerned that this would mean the leading Stirlingshire attraction could miss out on visitors.
Jenni Steele, the manager of Film and Creative industries at Visit Scotland also confirmed that these restrictions are gradually being lifted which will allow the tourism agency to promote their location in the future.
Mid-Scotland and Fife MSP Murdo Fraser has welcomed the clarification from Visit Scotland and has called on the tourism agency to help locations not currently included in the map maximise their tourist potential when restrictions are lifted.
Commenting Murdo Fraser MSP said;
“I fully understand the stance taken by Visit Scotland and I would hope that in the future all locations used in the TV series are able to fully benefit from their silver screen exposure.
“If the Outlander TV series is a global success it is vital that the locations used in the series are able to promote their role to tourists from across the world.
“Doune Castle is a fantastic visitor attraction in its own right and I believe the added exposure from the show can help it become a must see attraction for both film tourists and visitors travelling to the Stirlingshire area.”
