Liz Smith MSP, Shadow Minister for Sport and the Commonwealth Games has welcomed the £10 million investment to develop club sport in Scotland has been announced ahead of the Commonwealth Games. The four-year funding plan from sportscotland will create almost 50 new posts for regional development officers and support the growth of individual clubs through a Direct Club Investment (DCI) programme.Liz Smith MSP, Shadow Minister for Sport said: “I very much welcome the announcement on funding to help create new posts for regional development officers and the support which will be made available for large-scale club development projects. “However, it is to be hoped that the primary responsibility of those who will fill these new posts will be to develop sport in its most diverse definition and above all to help grow Scottish sport at a grass roots level. We need to work harder to ensure that the beneficiaries of spending on sport are not just for what are considered the most popular sports. “If Scotland is truly going to address the countries obesity and poor health record we need to encourage more and more Scots to take up sport and a healthy lifestyle. Increasing the availably of regional development officers for to support sports development in communities across Scotland can only help achieve this. “It is clear from SportScotland research that some sport facilities remain inaccessible to many low income families and is vital that this issue is addressed to help make access to sporting facilities affordable for all Scots.” ENDS
