Perthshire based MSP, Liz Smith and Cllr Alexander Stewart, Conservative MP candidate for Perth & North Perthshire have called on Perth and Kinross Council to re-think the proposed route of the road through the Garden of Remembrance at Perth Crematorium.
Liz Smith MSP and Cllr Alexander Stewart met with council officials this morning to press the case for a re-think on the proposed route and to highlight the level of anger being expressed in the local community.
Liz Smith, Scottish Conservative MSP for Mid Scotland & Fife said:
"It is now really urgent that Perth and Kinross Council acknowledges the extent of the anger being expressed in the local community. It is not too late for a last minute alteration to the proposed route and that is what needs to happen without any delay.
“For hundreds of people whose loved ones lie in the cemetery or who are remembered by the memorials within the gardens, the current proposal to build the new road at that particular location is wholly inappropriate. They feel very badly let down by a council which has not paid any attention to the strength of feeling in the local community and who seem destined to go ahead whatever the sensitivities.”
Cllr Alexander Stewart, Conservative MP candidate for Perth & North Perthshire said:
“The fact that over two thousand local residents from across Perth & Kinross have expressed their opposition to the current proposals is significant and their concerns must be taken into account.
“At present the new road would be incredibly intrusive and having been on a site visit feel would impact on what is a very important and emotional area for many families.
“Perth and Kinross Council must listen to the people and re-think the part of the road that affects the crematorium and garden of remembrance.”
