Mid-Scotland and Fife MSP Murdo Fraser has called on fellow politicians in the Scottish Parliament to support Transform Scotland’s Car-Free Tourism project.
The project aims to provide tourists with detailed routes and timetables of how to get to the top 24 tourist attractions in Scotland only using public transport.
The ‘Car-Free Tourism’ website provides detailed instructions on accessing the sites without having to jump between a number of travel planning websites.
Walking and cycling routes are provided as files that can be downloaded to smartphone apps and GPS devices. The site also provides advice for tourism operators encouraging them to develop or improve sustainable travel options for visitors.
Murdo’s motion in Parliament has already gathered cross-party support.
Commenting Murdo Fraser MSP said:
“In my current role as convenor of the Parliament’s tourism and energy committee I spend much of my time dissecting different initiatives that are aimed at either reducing emissions or increasing tourism, this project unites both of these objectives.
“Encouraging tourists to use public transport will not only play a role in reducing emissions but could also offer visitors a completely different experience of Scotland.
“A number of the attractions listed in the top 24, including Stirling Castle and the Cairngorms national park, are located out with the central belt travel network. Ensuring rural areas are adequately provided with public transport is a huge issue and this project will go some way to highlighting the gaps in current provision and where it can be improved upon.”
