In just over five years Britain will have run out of oil, coal and gas, according to the Global Sustainability Institute.
Mid-Scotland and Fife MSP Murdo Fraser believes that if these predictions are anywhere near accurate the Scottish Government should accelerate their drive to exploit domestic reserves of shale gas.
Commenting Murdo Fraser MSP said:
“Even if these predictions aren’t true, the finite nature of fossil fuels means that sooner or later the Scottish Government must start looking to exploit the potential of shale gas.
“Scotland is uniquely placed to take advantage of shale gas as we already have considerable amounts of drilling expertise based in the North Sea. However, if we don’t capitalise on this advantage, any potential shale gas bonanza could be over before it has even began.
“No renewable technology is mature enough to deliver household heating solutions and therefore only natural gas or fossil fuels can heat our homes and I for one would rather it was a domestic supply rather than imported gas from Russia and the Middle East.”
