Improving mental health should be a driving force in encouraging more Scots to play sport, according to Murdo Fraser MSP, who last week lent his support to the Scottish Sports Association #whysportmatters campaign.
The SSA #whysportmatters campaign promotes the positive impact of sport across various areas, including health & mental health, education, employment, economy, older adults & social care, personal skills & society overall.
During an event in Parliament Murdo chatted with SSA representatives and learnt more about sports restorative benefits when it comes to mental health.
Commenting Murdo Fraser MSP said:
“Mental health problems are becoming increasingly common in communities across Perth and Kinross, Fife, Stirling and Clackmannanshire and the SSA believe that sport can play a role in improving this.
“The positive endorphins released after playing sport can play a part in improving your mood and general outlook and regular exercise can also improve your self-confidence.
“Across Mid-Scotland and Fife there are a number of easily accessible indoor and outdoor sporting activities and I would encourage anyone who is suffering with mental health issues to investigate the SSA campaign and consult their doctor about what sport can do for your mental wellbeing.”
