Scottish Conservative politicians Liz Smith MSP and Councillor Callum Purves have renewed the call to have a direct rail line between Edinburgh to Perth.
The pair would like to see Kinross station re-opened in order to cut time on the Edinburgh to Perth route by up to 35 minutes and to serve local communities.
The move follows a plan by the Scottish Conservatives to review the Beeching cuts of the 1960s. While the Edinburgh to Perth rail route was not hit by the Beeching Cuts, it was changed in 1970 due to the building of the M90 motorway.
Douglas Ross has already put forward plans to Power Up Scotland, which featured plans to develop more rail travel between Scotland’s cities and the review could bring back stations in the region.
Commenting, Liz Smith, who represents the Mid Scotland and Fife region, said: “The direct rail route from Edinburgh to Perth via Dunfermline, Kinross and Glenfarg was closed in 1970 to make way for the M90 motorway.
“It’s been estimated that the reinstatement of a direct rail link between Edinburgh and Perth would reduce journey times by up to 35 minutes. A direct line would not only create a key hub on the inter-city network at Perth, it would also serve Fife and Kinross-shire, where there has been a sizeable population growth.
And Councillor Purves, who represents the Kinross-shire ward, added: “Reinstating the rail link to Kinross is a project that has strong support in the local community, and it is something that I have been campaigning for since before I was elected. It is fantastic that Douglas Ross has announced that the Scottish Conservatives will review the Beeching cuts that have damaged many communities.
“As Kinross-shire continues to grow as a result of large-scale developments and with many local residents commuting outwith the area to get to work, the case for a new train station is stronger now than ever.
“The SNP have simply dithered and delayed when it comes to reviewing a direct rail link between Perth and Edinburgh. The Scottish Conservatives will make this a priority.”
