Mid-Scotland and Fife MSP Murdo Fraser has called on residents in the North of Scotland to investigate electricity supplier options, as a DECC survey has found them to be in the least likely region in the UK to switch from their home supplier.
When investigated it emerges that some customers, paying via direct debit, are being charged up to £105 extra per year compared to customers on cheaper tariffs.
66% of residents in the North of Scotland were still with their home supplier compared to Southern Scotland where 57% have already switched to a different electricity provider.
Commenting Murdo Fraser MSP said:
“Where a better deal exists, the UK Government is working hard to make it easier for bill payers to switch energy supplier. However, residents in the North of Scotland are failing to take advantage of this and as a result could be paying more for their electricity.
“Residents across Mid-Scotland and Fife, particularly rural areas of Perthshire, are struggling thanks to rising electricity bills, in part caused by renewable subsidies. However, switching supplier, as shown by these statistics could save residents up to £105 a year on their electricity bill.
“Residents in the South of Scotland understand this and as a result a far greater proportion have switched from their home supplier. With energy bills rising faster than any other commodity it is essential that home owners across Perth and Kinross, Fife, Stirling and Clackmannanshire look for the very best deal.”
