Figures released by the Scottish Government have shown that farm incomes have dropped by 15% in the last year with an £111m drop in revenue from 2011 figures.
Mid-Scotland and Fife MSP Murdo Fraser believes that poor weather coupled with increasing regulation is beginning to hurt farmers.
Since 2007, the SNP have added more than 50 new regulations to govern farming.
Commenting Murdo Fraser MSP said:
“This year harvests were hit once again thanks to a combination of colder temperatures and heavy rain. Rising costs, exchange rates and lower market prices also hit the industry.
“There is a vibrant farming community in Fife, Perthshire and across Scotland yet more and more pressure is being pushed on to our farmers by extra regulation from the Scottish Government and the EU.
“The Scottish Government must understand that by increasing the burden of regulation, farmers spend more time on bureaucracy rather than in the fields doing their job.
“Farming will recover, but the authorities must be sympathetic when placing regulations on Scottish farmers.”
