The Co-operative are set to announce losses of over £2bn in 2013, their worst financial results in history.
As part of plans to revitalise the group it is understood that the Co-op will look to sell its substantial farming operation including their holding in Blairgowrie.
The Co-op is also actively considering the sale of its 750 pharmacies, which generated revenues of £764m in 2012.
The Blairgowrie farm has been run by the Co-op since 1952 and currently grows, strawberries, carrots and cereals.
Commenting Murdo Fraser MSP said:
“For those who work at the Blairgowrie farm this news will cause great concern and the Co-Op must work hard to secure the site’s future.
“The Co-operative has been farming in Blairgowrie for over 50 years and have been a valued local employer helping sustain attractive careers in farming.
“Extreme weather in recent seasons has resulted in squeezed margins for many Perthshire berry farmers but I would encourage the Co-op to reconsider any move to sell off the Blairgowrie operation as there are still strong profits to be had.
“Finally, with rumours circulating as to the future of the Co-Operative pharmacy business I would hope that workers in the Perth store are kept fully informed as to their futures.”
