Mid-Scotland and Fife MSP Murdo Fraser has questioned whether average speed cameras on the A9 will be enough to solve road safety issues on Scotland’s deadliest road.
Average speed cameras are due to be installed on the A9 by the summer of 2014 and will be Scotland’s second road to have such a system erected.
The first was installed on the A77 in Ayrshire between Bogend Toll and Ardwell Bay in 2005.
Commenting Murdo Fraser MSP said:
“Irresponsible drivers travelling at excessive speeds are a regular feature on the A9 and anything that deters such individuals is to be welcomed.
“But we should not pretend that speeding is in itself the primary cause of many serious and fatal accidents on the A9. Experience suggests that driver confusion and frustration, caused by the road layout, are the root causes of many such incidents.
“Measures to improve driver awareness of the road layout would be useful in the short term. Long-term, it is an absolute requirement that we see a full dual carriageway between Perth and Inverness, and I would encourage the Scottish Government to pay heed to the growing chorus of calls for this vital work to be brought forward from its proposed completion date of 2025.”
