Conservative MSP and author, Murdo Fraser, is set to appear at Pitlochry’s Winter Words book festival this Friday to talk about his first historical work, The Rivals.
The Rivals tells the story of the Scottish Civil War 1644–45 and the personal fight for Scotland between James Graham, 1st Marquis of Montrose and Archibald Campbell, 8th Marquis of Argyll.
In his book Murdo examines these two remarkable men, underlining their different personalities: Montrose, the brilliant military tactician – bold and brave but rash, and Campbell – altogether a more opaque figure, cautious, considered and difficult to read.
Pitlochry’s Winter Words Festival is now in its twelfth year and is regarded as the start of Scotland’s literary year.
Commenting Murdo Fraser MSP said:
“Last year I fulfilled a lifetime ambition by releasing my first book on Scottish history, the Rivals, and I can now achieve another longstanding goal by appearing at Pitlochry’s Winter Words Festival.
“The line up at this year’s festival is impressive and it is a real honour to appear alongside the great and the good of Scottish literature.
“Completing the Rivals alongside my role as an MSP was a long but worthwhile process as I believe this is a period of Scottish history that is in real need of further exposure and study.
“I would encourage anyone interested in Scotland’s past to come along to Pitlochry tomorrow. There is a wide range of excellent authors to hear from".
