Perth will be revealed as Scotland’s “No” city when the referendum votes are counted on Friday, according to a local politician campaigning to keep the UK together.
Conservative MSP Murdo Fraser said he expected that, of all Scotland’s seven cities, Perth would be the one which delivered the highest “No” vote, comprehensively rejecting Scottish independence. With the vote being held on Thursday, campaigning across the area has been at fever pitch, but the Better Together campaign is confident that it is ahead.
Murdo Fraser said:
“Local Better Together activists have been working extremely hard at grass roots level over the past two years. In the last few months, we have directly contacted some 30,000 potential swing voters, identifying voting intentions and persuading theundecided to vote No.
“Based on our figures, I would be confident of a substantial majority for No in Perth and across the whole of the Perth and Kinross area. We have had overwhelming support on the doorsteps and on the streets in response to our positive campaign to keep Scotland in the United Kingdom.
“We are in no way complacent about the position, and will be using every last minute between now and the close of polls onThursday to maximise the No vote. We are well aware that despite the strength of the No campaign here in Perth and Kinross, there are other areas of Scotland more likely to vote Yes, and therefore we need every last vote here to balance them out.
“There is no doubt, however, that Perth is heading for a convincing No vote, one that I would expect would exceed that in any of Scotland’s other six cities.”
