Mid-Scotland and Fife MSP Murdo Fraser has called on Perth and Kinross Council to repair cavernous pot-holes following heavy rain in the region or face the prospect of a hefty compensation bill.
Much of Perth and Kinross has been under water following historic levels of rainfall and now vital transport links are struggling as a result of water entering road surfaces, freezing and then expanding which causes breakages.
In 2014 it was revealed that Scottish Councils had paid out an astonishing £1400 per day over the last five years as a result of pothole compensation claims.
Commenting Murdo Fraser MSP said:
“As the clear up following recent heavy rain begins I hope that Perth and Kinross Council will make a priority of patching up broken road surfaces.
“Large potholes have been spotted on roads across the region and if this isn’t dealt with quickly then the Council could be facing a large compensation bill from motorists whose cars have been damaged as a result of pitted surfaces.
“Between 2009 and 2014 councils across Scotland paid out an astonishing £2.7 million on these claims. My concern is that the Council take swift action then the bill for 2016 could be very high.
“It is important that roads are maintained to the highest possible standard and I would encourage the Council to fill potholes using gas patchers which have proven successful in fixing surfaces permanently.”
