Information uncovered via Freedom of Information request from Murdo Fraser MSP has shown that patients staying in NHS Tayside hospitals will be treated to a New Year's Day meal that costs as little as £1.22 to make.
The Scottish Government has recently received criticism for cutting the NHS Scotland food budget by 10% and Murdo believes urgent action is required to reverse the declining standards in Scotland's hospitals.
Patients recovering in Tayside hospitals, like Perth Royal Infirmary, will be able to chose from several menu choices but even the most expensive combination only costs to £1.87 to produce.
The latest figures from the Institute for Fiscal Studies show that the SNP will slash NHS spending by 1 per cent in real terms between 2009-10 and 2015-16, while England increases it by 4 per cent.
The Scottish Government’s own figures show that the NHS cut its food and drink budget from £32.6million to £29.7million last year.
Commenting Mid-Scotland and Fife MSP Murdo Fraser MSP;
"Patients recovering from illness or operation require a certain level of sustenance to ensure their recovery and whilst not suggesting they aren't getting this there has to be questions over the value of meals costing as little as £1.22 to make.
"Health boards, like NHS Tayside, are under financial pressure and it would not surprise me if they are targeting catering budgets before taking money out of front line care.
"The Scottish Government wants us to live healthier lifestyles but this must start with patients in their care enjoying the best possible diet.
"Doctors and nurses in NHS Tayside are working flat out and it is high time the Scottish Government gave them the tools to do their job."
