St Andrews has cemented its place as Scotland’s top university by finishing 4th in the Complete University Guide of Britain’s best higher education institutions. In recognition of this achievement Mid-Scotland and Fife MSP Murdo Fraser has lodged a motion in parliament hailing its success.
Finishing 4th for a second year running, St Andrews tops the Scottish university league table, finishing well above both Edinburgh and Glasgow.
Murdo Fraser has highlighted the strong performance of St Andrews as another reason why Scotland is best served by remaining part of the UK. Under current arrangements Scottish higher education institutions are able to draw upon significant levels of UK-wide research funding.
Mid-Scotland and Fife Murdo Fraser MSP said:
“Scotland’s universities are the envy of the world and it is especially pleasing to see St Andrews finish so high up in the UK rankings.
“Famed for its research and all-round student experience it is no surprise that St Andrews leads the Scottish Universities and ranks so highly amongst its UK competitors.
“The strong performance of Scottish universities underlines the success of the current research funding regime. By remaining part of the UK, St Andrews and other Scottish institutions can successfully bid for research funding that would otherwise not be available to an independent state. This funding allows our universities to lead the world in teaching, research and student experience.”
