Sources close to the Prime Minister have revealed that the UK Government is considering a pledge to halt the construction of onshore turbines.
Mid-Scotland and Fife MSP Murdo Fraser has welcomed this move and has called for a similar approach to be taken in Scotland.
David Cameron wants to toughen planning laws and tear up subsidy rules to make current turbines financially unviable.
It is understood that the Conservatives could make a manifesto pledge to cap the total number of wind farms, toughen up planning rules to make them harder to build or even lower Government subsidies for turbines.
Commenting Scottish Conservative Energy Spokesman Murdo Fraser MSP said:
“Rural Communities are nearing breaking point such is the level of opposition to unsuitable turbine developments.
“Residents across Mid-Scotland and Fife and in particular, rural Perthshire, Stirling and Fife are in open revolt at the prospect of more turbines on their doorstep.
“Nearly 40% of Scottish Households are making the tough choice between heating and eating, a situation in part caused by green subsidies handed to turbine developers.
“What we need in Scotland is a balanced energy policy, in place of the SNP’s current obsession with wind power to the exclusion of other technologies”.
