Mid-Scotland and Fife MSP, Murdo Fraser, has welcomed a decision from the High Constables of Perth to admit female members for the first time in the organisation’s 188-year history.
The Scottish Conservative MSP praised the society for its progressive step and believes that welcoming women members has brought the Fair City institution into the 21st century.
In a recent vote nearly 90% of members backed changing the society’s code of practice to welcome female members for the first time.
As a result, Murdo has submitted a motion in the Scottish Parliament welcoming the decision and has called on fellow MSPs to back the organisation.
Commenting, Murdo Fraser MSP said:
“I am delighted that the Perth Society of High Constables has voted to open up their organisation to women by such an overwhelming majority.
“This move has brought the organisation into the 21st century and has increased its relevance for a new age.
“The High Constables of Perth is a historic organisation and one that can trace its roots back centuries and I am pleased to see its long-term legacy secure.
“In a progressive and modern world it is only right that women are welcomed into their organisation and I hope that fellow MSPs mark this vote by backing my motion in Parliament.”
