Mid-Scotland and Fife MSP Murdo Fraser has welcomed the latest CashBack for communities initiative that will give £2 million pounds to grassroots rugby, but has called for more support for rugby league in Fife and Scotland as a whole.
Last year, against all expectations, the Scottish Bravehearts reached the quarterfinal of the Rugby League World Cup and Murdo believes that with the right level of support Scotland can become a successful rugby league nation.
Fife is home to the Lions one of Scotland’s eight senior rugby league teams, and Murdo believes that with greater funding playing numbers can continue to increase.
Commenting Murdo Fraser MSP said:
“Following the success of the Bravehearts at last year’s Rugby League World Cup I am convinced that with the right support rugby league can continue to grow in Fife and Scotland as a whole.
“Fife is already home to one of Scotland’s senior rugby league teams, and I believe that if the right structures are put in place the grassroots and senior game can continue to grow across the region.
“Rugby League has proved successful in turning around the lives of disaffected youths and the Scottish Government should recognise this by allocating funding to improve coaching and club numbers.”
