Following Friday’s severe flood, Mid-Scotland and Fife MSP Murdo Fraser has met with Alyth residents affected by flooding. He was accompanied on the visit by local Councillor Dennis Melloy who has been active in the town since last Friday helping victims.
Many homes and businesses were damaged by the high waters after the burn that runs through the town burst its banks and many residents are now anxiously awaiting alternative accommodation.
Commenting Murdo Fraser MSP said:
“Alyth is a town which has always had a fantastic community spirit. It is tremendous to see everyone pulling together to help those who have suffered in the recent flood with the Town Hall full of donated food and clothes and assistance being provided by the community and the various public agencies.
“Everyone I have spoken to has been hugely appreciative of the emergency services last Friday. Although many people have suffered the loss of property and damage to their homes it is a relief that no one was injured in what could have been a much more serious situation
“Whilst the priority for now must be help for those who need it, we do need to look at whether there were any steps that could have been taken to minimise the impact of the flood on Alyth citizens.
“A large number of the affected people I spoke to believed that cut and fallen timber from the Den of Alyth had been swept down river by flood waters and became trapped against the bridges which exacerbated the problem with the burn water bursting its banks. It is important that we have a thorough investigation to learn whether this was the case and what lessons can be learned.”
