Mid-Scotland and Fife MSP, Murdo Fraser, has pressed Nicola Sturgeon to make good on her promise for respectful debate following news that “quisling” rant councillor, Dave Doogan, has been re-selected for the SNP.
Cllr Doogan made national headlines when he raged about “quislings” and “redcoats” during a debate on Gaelic language at Perth and Kinross council. At the time Nicola Sturgeon stated that anti-English language would not be tolerated, but despite her condemnation Mr Doogan has been reselected to stand for the SNP and was recently pictured alongside Deputy First Minister, John Swinney.
Yesterday in the Scottish Parliament, Murdo Fraser, called for the SNP to practice what they preach in relation to courteous debate.
Commenting Murdo Fraser MSP said;
“If the SNP and the First Minister are serious about leading a respectful debate on a second independence referendum then they should start by getting their own house in order.
“Despite Nicola Sturgeon’s robust condemnation of Cllr Doogan’s remarks he has been selected to stand for the SNP again, sending out the completely wrong message. In the SNP if you abuse people and use terms like “quisling” not only will you face little punishment but you will be rewarded with the opportunity to stand for election and a photo call next to the Deputy First Minister, John Swinney.
“The SNP expect this debate to be conducted cordially but it is clearly a case of do as I say not as I do.”
