Mid-Scotland and Fife MSP and Convenor of the Parliament’s Tourism committee, Murdo Fraser, has highlighted the positive contribution businesses in his region are making in providing accessible-friendly tourism services.
Accessible tourism encompasses a whole range of concepts including tourism for people with physical disabilities, access requirements, families with young children, elderly people, people with visual or hearing impairments and people with dietary requirements.
In Parliament, Murdo highlighted the contribution of Tulchan Farm Lodges near Perth and the MND Caravan in St Andrews. Other examples of good practice in accessible tourism include the RSPB visitor centre in Kinross.
Speaking in the Chamber Murdo Fraser MSP said;
“In my own electoral region of Mid-Scotland and Fife there are a number of attractions that have achieved top marks for accessibility on the “Euans Guide” website. Tulchan Farm Lodges, near Glenalmond, enjoys a 5 star rating and provides specialist facilities and respite breaks for the disabled. Their services include round the clock care staff, meal provision and the opportunity to go out on expert-led outings and excursions.
“In Fife, MND Scotland have invested in an accessible-friendly caravan which helps provide a safe environment for those with limited mobility. Both of these examples demonstrate the importance of new surroundings in improving the outlook and quality of life of disabled people.
“Big strides are being made, but more can always be done. Enjoying the same opportunities and having access to the same sites as the able bodied is extremely important, and more businesses should be encouraged to improve their accessible-friendly offerings.”
