Scottish Conservative MSP Murdo Fraser has welcomed the unveiling of a massive building hall that will accommodate Type 31 Frigates being built at Rosyth.
The politician, who represents the Mid Scotland and Fife region, was reacting to the announcement that the £31.5 million building hall, which measures 147 metres long and 30 metres in height, can site two vessels being assembled at the same time, sitting side by side.
Building of the ships, which have been described by the UK Government as being the ‘beating heart of the Royal Navy,’ is expected to begin next year at the Fife site.
Commenting, Mr Fraser said: “This announcement by the UK Government of the massive building hall that will accommodate the assembly of the Type 31 Frigates at Rosyth is great news for Fife and for Scotland.
“Building the hall has already created 100 jobs at Robertson Construction along with a further 100 through the company’s supply chain and the assembly of the Frigates will lead to more jobs at Babcock Rosyth.
“This announcement has been described as a ‘major milestone’ by the UK Government and yet again it shows the commitment from them to bolster our armed forces and, at the same time, create jobs and award valuable defence contracts to the likes of Babcock Rosyth.”
He continued: “This move follows the previous announcement by the UK Government of a £16.5 billion funding for the country’s defences over the next four years, boosting our shipbuilding industry and creating hundreds of jobs in the process.
“I have submitted and circulated a Motion at the Scottish Parliament asking fellow MSPs to congratulate Babcock Rosyth on this tremendous achievement of unveiling the building hall.”
