Mid-Scotland and Fife Conservative MSPs Murdo Fraser and Liz Smith have welcomed the result of the European Elections in Perth and Kinross which revealed a 1.3% increase of the Conservative share of the vote.
Notably there was 1.3% decrease in the SNP vote share with UKIP polling a strong 10% in the area. Unionist parties polled 65% compared to 35% for the independence parties.
Commenting Murdo Fraser MSP said:
“I’d like to Congratulate Ian Duncan as the Scottish Conservative's next representative in Europe and would also like to welcome the strong Conservative showing in Perth and Kinross where we returned a 1.3% increase in our vote share.
“With the referendum 16 weeks away this a clear signal of support for remaining part of the UK.
“Whilst there is more work still to be done, Better Together campaigners will take heart at the performance of Unionist parties coupled with a decrease in the SNP share of the vote.”
Commenting Liz Smith MSP said:
“This is a strong result for the UK and underlines the strength of feeling in Perth and Kinross for staying part of Britain.
“Many voters are unhappy with the SNP’s crusade to break up Britain and feel that they have taken their eye off the ball.
“Although there is still much work to be done activists will feel enthused by this strong result as we approach the final stage of campaigning in the referendum.”
