Murdo Fraser has welcomed Gleneagles victory in sealing hosting rights for the 2019 Solheim Cup by lodging a parliamentary motion and has backed the course to host the most attended event in the competition’s history.
Gleneagles has won the right to host The Solheim Cup in 2019 which is the 16th edition of the premier team event in women’s golf which will be played at the Jack Nicklaus designed PGA Centenary Course.
After an extensive bidding process, the final decision saw Scotland’s submission come out on top against a strong bid from the Bro Hof Slott Golf club in Sweden. Held every two years, the event has grown into the most prestigious international women’s professional golf team event.
Commenting Murdo Fraser MSP said:
“Last year’s Ryder Cup proved that Perth and Kinross has the infrastructure to cope with one of the biggest global sporting events and it will bring that organisational expertise to the 2019 Solheim Cup.
“Gleneagles is also one of the most iconic venues in all of sport and I am convinced that female golfers from both the states and Europe will relish the prospect of taking it on.
“This year’s Solheim Cup was one of the most controversial in the competition’s history and I am convinced, such is the appetite for golf in this part of the world, that the 2019 edition will be the biggest and most attended match ever.”
