Mid-Scotland and Fife MSP Murdo Fraser has backed Gleneagles in their bid to attract the 2019 Solheim Cup to Perthshire. The Auchterarder venue hosted last year’s Ryder Cup and the course and facilities were praised by players, commentators and spectators alike.
The biennial women's match play event between Europe and United States was last held in Scotland in 2000. Germany will play host to the tournament this September with Europe being the current holders.
The bid is being led by VisitScotland in conjunction with the Scottish government.
Commenting Murdo Fraser MSP said:
“Last year I had the privilege of attending both the senior and junior Ryder Cups in Perthshire at Gleneagles and Blairgowrie respectively and the area proved that it is more than capable of hosting a major golf tournament.
“Scotland is the home of golf and the players, spectators and media love coming home for big events.
“Gleneagles has the big tournament infrastructure and experience and hosting the Solheim Cup will not only boost the local economy but can also help inspire the next generation of Carly Booths and Catriona Matthews.”
