Mid-Scotland and Fife MSPs, Murdo Fraser and Liz Smith, have welcomed indications from Perth and Kinross Council that they plan to replace the ageing Perth High School as part of a £50 million project.
Council bosses also confirmed that sacrifices will have to made elsewhere in order to fund the flagship project.
There are currently 1600 pupils at Perth High but earlier in the year the condition of the 1960s building was described as “poor” in a survey of school estates.
Commenting, Murdo Fraser MSP said:
“Perth High is in dire need of replacement and I am pleased that the Council are taking forward this £50 million project which has the potential to transform the learning environment for both pupils and teachers.
“Given the current financial circumstances it is only right that the council takes a sensible and pragmatic approach to funding this project. Ensuring that future generations have a top class school facility but not a legacy of debt is very important.
“Perth and Kinross council had no choice but to repurpose funding from other areas, but I am sure most people will agree with this approach as providing quality school facilities is very important.”
Commenting, Liz Smith MSP said:
“It is welcome that Perth and Kinross Council have confirmed funding for Perth High School.
“Following the recent school estates review, it became clear that the current building was no longer fit for purpose and it is important that a new facility was given the go ahead quickly.
“A new state-of-the-art school can provide an unrivalled learning environment and I look forward to watching this project move forward over the coming months and years.
“Transforming the school estate is expensive but one of the most important jobs for the council. Parents and teachers will be delighted that this decision has been reached.”
