Mid-Scotland and Fife MSPs, Murdo Fraser and Liz Smith, have welcomed a new Scotrail promotion to encourage more people to come and visit Fife.
For just £5.00, the ScotRail “Fife Fiver” will allow for off-peak day return travel between Fife and Edinburgh or Dundee at any time after 10am until 3.30pm, and then from 6.30pm on weekdays. At weekends, the ticket can be used at any time.
ScotRail has come in for sustained criticism for the performance of their Fife services with Murdo and Liz recently attending talks with the Transport Minister and train bosses over proposed measures to improve services.
Following these talks, ScotRail have announced that an additional 5,000 seats will be made available whilst also pledging to introduce new, more comfortable, trains.
Commenting Murdo Fraser MSP said:
“The 'Fife Fiver' is a welcome announcement from ScotRail and I hope that passengers are able to take advantage of this between April and June. If successful I would like to see this rolled out to other parts of the country in order to encourage people to travel via public transport.
“In recent months the performance of ScotRail in Fife has fallen short of what many passengers expect and it’s important that passengers' views are heard when it comes to what is going wrong on our railways.
“Ultimately, ScotRail have a long way to go in winning back customers' confidence but this is the right way to start.”
Commenting Liz Smith MSP said:
“ScotRail has come in for sustained criticism recently as a result of overcrowding and delays in Fife but this new promotion is hopefully a sign of better things to come
“As we approach the summer months, incentivising travel to Fife is a good idea and can play a role in driving up visitor numbers.
“I would call on residents in both Dundee and Edinburgh to give the ‘Fife Fiver’ a try and see what the Kingdom has to offer.”
