2014 will mark the centenary anniversary of the First World War. As part of the commemorations Liz Smith, Scottish Conservative MSP for Mid Scotland & Fife is encouraging local Veterans to claim their Veterans’ Badge and has also highlighted the new medals which have been commissioned for veterans who served on the Arctic Convoys, Bomber Command and in the Women’s Land Army and Timber Corp during World War II. Liz Smith MSP is encouraging those who may be eligible for either badge or those who know someone who may be eligible to apply for the Veterans’ Badge. Liz Smith, Scottish Conservative MSP for Mid Scotland & Fife said: “2014 will be a very important year as we mark the centenary anniversary of the First World War. “For generations our Armed Forces have served our country across the world in many roles from war fighting, peacekeeping and reconstruction to home defence. In so doing, they have defended our country, our way of life and our cherished values. “Every Scottish family will have had a family member who has fought for their country in the First World War. The men who gave their lives in the Great War will remain heroes forever. The last British Veteran has now died but their bravery and suffering must never be forgotten. “It is vital that we focus on supporting veterans of all ages by celebrating, and raising public awareness of, their achievements and their contribution to society. To promote recognition of veterans by the wider British public the unique and unifying symbol of the HM Armed Forces Veterans Badge is available to all those who have served in HM Armed Forces. "The entitlement to the Veterans’ Badge was recently extended so that men and women who enlisted in HM Armed Forces between 3 September 1945 and 31 December 1984 are now entitled to the badge. "If anyone thinks they or someone they know may be eligible for the Veterans’ Badge or the new medals for the Arctic Convoys, Bomber Command or the Women’s Land Army and Timber Corp during World War II., I would encourage them to contact the Service Personnel and Veterans’ Agency on 0800 169 2277 who will be able to further assist with applications or alternatively contact me office on 0131 348 5651 and I will be happy to assist.”
