Liz Smith, Scottish Conservative MSP for Mid Scotland & Fife has given her support to the first Litter Week of Action will be a dedicated week of activity highlighting the major issue of littering from vehicles. Supporters of the week will be encouraged to carry out educational and enforcement activities during this week, reaching out to road and rail users, and pushing the key messages. Liz Smith, Scottish Conservative MSP for Mid Scotland & Fife said: “Litter being thrown from cars has become an increasing problem especially in rural areas. “I have received many letter over the years regarding litter issues particularly on motorway verges and I would be interested to see just how much taxpayers money goes on picking up litter needlessly dropped or thrown from cars. “In Scotland, an average of 7 bottles and cans can be found along every 100 metres of major roads. Not only a poor impression for visitors to the country, this litter problem is also dangerous for Scotland’s road users and wildlife.
- “Discarded litter apparently costs Scotland £50m +. Surely money better spent elsewhere.
“2013 is the Year of Natural Scotland with tourism industry and environmental groups using this opportunity to promote Scotland’s breathtaking scenery and natural heritage. “Survey after survey of visitors to Scotland has shown that our natural environment is the number one reason why people visit Scotland. “I welcome the Litter Week of Action and hope this can help discourage the minority of people who litter on Scotland’s roads and travel networks.”
