Mid-Scotland and Fife MSP Murdo Fraser has welcomed the UK Government’s nomination of the Forth Bridge for World Heritage site status by submitting a motion in parliament calling on fellow MSP’s to give the bid their backing.
If successful the Forth Bridge would become Scotland’s sixth world heritage attraction, and Fife’s first.
Two visitor centres are scheduled to open up within the next 18 months on either side of the bridge.
Commenting Murdo Fraser MSP said:
“The Forth Bridge is an iconic symbol of Scotland’s industrial past. The bridge and its cantilever design is still considered an engineering marvel and supports 3 million passengers annually.
“The Forth Bridge deserves its place amongst other UNESCO sites and if successful would become Fife’s first World Heritage attraction.
“The bridge and the accompanying visitor centres will be instrumental in attracting tourists to Fife and World Heritage site status will give the area global recognition. I hope fellow MSP’s recognise this and sign up to my motion.”
