Mid-Scotland and Fife MSP Murdo Fraser has lodged a parliamentary motion to congratulate Pitlochry-based Heartland FM for winning the Best Radio Station award at the Scottish New Music awards.
Self-styled as the awards “for music lovers by music lovers” the New Scotland Music Awards aim to promote and support Scottish culture.
Independently run Heartland FM relies exclusively on volunteers to provide continuous radio coverage around the clock.
Heartland FM has often been cited as a model upon which other community stations can base themselves. Their list of achievements include featuring in a six part BBC2 documentary.
On hearing the news Murdo Fraser MSP said:
“This is due recognition for a station, based in Highland Perthshire, that has been providing a key local service for many years.
“The volunteers who work tirelessly to produce the station are a credit to the local community and are truly deserving of this award.
“Although relatively new, the Scottish New Music Awards carry real prestige and I’m sure everyone involved in Heartland FM is delighted to receive this accolade.”
Motion reads as,
That the Parliament congratulates Heartland FM on winning the Best Radio Station award at the Scottish New Music awards; understands that the station plays an integral part in the community and praises the hard work of everyone involved with it; notes that it is run entirely by volunteers and provides output 24-hours-a-day, seven-days-a-week; believes that the station educates and informs people; compliments it on what it understands is its part in inspiring other stations to operate on similar platforms; recognises that the Scottish New Music awards are independently run and seek to promote Scottish culture, and believes in the merit of awards run by music lovers for music lovers.
