Murdo Fraser MSP has shown his support for the Scottish Sports Alliance by taking part in their #isupportsport selfie campaign.
Whilst posing for their selfie Murdo spoke with members of the Scottish Sports Alliance on the positive impact of sport for general health, mental health, social care, education, work life , the economy, communities and social cohesion.
Being active has been described as “the best buy in public health” as it fundamentally supports people to live longer and happier lives.
Mid-Scotland and Fife MSP Murdo Fraser MSP said:
“Being active and taking part in Sport has a huge range of health benefits and it is important that we encourage as many people as possible to take part in sport.
“The positive endorphins released during exercise are hugely beneficial to our mental health and have the power to turn bad days into good. Furthermore, enjoying competition and teamwork can have knock-on benefits for our work and home life.
“In Perth and Kinross, Fife, Stirling and Clackmannanshire we have some of the best outdoor spaces in the Scotland and I would urge people to get out and enjoy some fresh air.”
Kim Atkinson, CEO of the Scottish Sports Association, said;
“Already nearly one-fifth of our population participate in sport through one of Scotland’s 13,000 sports clubs. While having fun, they already reap the many benefits of being active – benefits that we’d like more people to enjoy. Currently 2,500 people in Scotland die every year from being physically inactive – yet participating in sport and being active can reduce the risks of premature mortality by up to 30%.
“We need to embrace the many benefits of participating in sport – from sheer enjoyment to positive contributions to health, mental health, education and economic productivity as highlighted by #whysportmatters. Our members provide opportunities for people of all ages to get active and we would encourage everyone to find their sport(s) and to join us in saying #isupportsport.”
