Mid-Scotland and Fife MSP Murdo Fraser has lodged a motion in the Scottish Parliament urging MSP’s to support Scotland’s progress in the Rugby League world Cup as well calling for greater support of the sport in Scotland.
On Friday Scotland will play defending champions New Zealand in the quarter final, the first time the ‘Bravehearts’ have ever progressed to this stage in the competition.
The majority of the Scottish team is composed of Australasian and English-born Scots. On the back of the ‘Bravehearts’ success the Mid-Scotland and Fife MSP would like to see the sport achieve greater grass-roots participation in Scotland.
Commenting Murdo Fraser MSP said:
“In their unbeaten run, Scotland have been the surprise package in the competition and have managed to out-perform Celtic rivals, Ireland and Wales.
“Rugby League is still relatively new to Scotland but I would hope that the success of the ‘Bravehearts’ will encourage more Scots to get out and give the sport a try.
“Within my own region the Fife Lions play out of Kirkcaldy, but there is plenty room for expansion as the number of teams competing is still relatively low compared to Rugby Union.
“I’ll be tuning in on Friday to watch Scotland’s progress and I hope that constituents in Mid-Scotland and Fife do likewise and cheer on Stirling born winger David Scott.”
