There are 123 fewer teachers educating in Fife schools since the SNP came to power, with 67 posts being lost in the last year, a record that Murdo Fraser has called “hugely concerning.”
The Scottish Government has been heavily criticised for a fall in literacy and numeracy skills and for failing pupils from poorer backgrounds. The First Minister has been forced to admit that Scottish Education is “not good enough”.
And analysis from Scottish Government figures show that under the SNP, more than 123 teaching posts have been lost in Fife since 2007, a drop of 7%.
Mid-Scotland and Fife MSP, Murdo Fraser, has called on the Scottish Government to do more to help Local Authorities attract teachers.
Mid-Scotland and Fife MSP Murdo Fraser said;
“The plummeting number of teachers in Fife shows just how badly the SNP has taken its eye off the ball.
“It is hugely concerning to see 67 teaching posts lost last year and 123 over the last eight years. With cutbacks in teacher numbers it is no surprise that pupil attainment is suffering.
“At the same time, teachers are frustrated by a Scottish Government which is seeking more and more control over education.
“The SNP has had eight years to address the problems but it has failed to deliver. Now it is time for all these issues to be addressed, starting with the drop in teacher numbers.”
