A report from the Royal Mail has shown that the KY9 postcode in Fife has the fifth oldest population of anywhere in the UK and the oldest in Scotland. The average age of the KY9 postcode area is 54 years old.
Mid-Scotland and Fife MSP Murdo Fraser believes these statistics underline why it is important that Scotland remains part of the UK as Scottish pensioners are better protected when Scotland shares risks and resources with the rest of the UK.
To mark the 40th anniversary of the allocation of postcodes to every town in Britain, Royal Mail has commissioned a study into characteristics of the UK through the lens of the postcode
The study gives a unique insight across five features of everyday life in 2014 in communities the length and breadth of the UK
Commenting Murdo Fraser MSP said:
“Scotland’s has a higher proportion of elderly residents than anywhere else in the UK and that places a unique strain on both the NHS and welfare services.
“By staying part of the UK, Scotland can spread these costs over 60 million residents as opposed to just 5 million.
“Fife is an extremely desirable place to live and many retirees move to the area for their post-work years. However, this places a strain on welfare services and only by remaining part of the UK can residents in Fife expect to receive the same levels of high quality care that currently exists.”
