The number of police officers on Scotland’s streets fell by more than 250 in the past year, new figures show.
Statistics released today by the Scottish Government show officer numbers dropped by 1.4 per cent in the year leading up to 31 March
Police Scotland has had a number of problems since inception, and Murdo Fraser believes these latest statistics are a cause for concern.
Commenting Mid-Scotland and Fife MSP Murdo Fraser said:
“Police Scotland has not been without its troubles during its first year in operation and these latest figures pose further questions as to how well the organisation is keeping our streets safe.
“Frontline officers are crucial for rural communities in Perthshire and news of a drop in PC’s when coupled with a reduction in public counter opening hours will concern residents across the region.
“There have been growing concerns across Mid-Scotland and Fife that police officers are spending less time on our streets as a result of paperwork and backroom tasks. It is vital that Police Scotland maintains a visible presence in our communities and a reduction in officer numbers puts this at risk.”
