Mid-Scotland and Fife MSP, Murdo Fraser, has urged rural residents to use the “Coverage Tracker” website to check mobile data coverage before purchasing a new mobile phone.
By using the Mobiles.co.uk “Coverage Tracker” tool, phone owners can now check the strength of 4G, 3G and 2G signals on different networks in their area.
The digital divide between urban and rural areas is highlighted by the data which shows that no rural area in Scotland is currently in receipt of a 4G signal. 3G coverage is also patchy in Highland Perthshire and rural areas of Fife and Stirling (photos attached).
The Conservative MSP is calling for network providers to create a better and more inclusive service.
Murdo Fraser MSP said:
“This map confirms what we already know and that is rural residents are poorly served when it comes to mobile data coverage.
“Most mobile phone contracts include a data allowance, however if you live in a remote area you have no chance of being able to make use of this.
“I would encourage residents thinking of buying a new mobile to use this website to see which operator offers the best service.
“The further north you travel the poorer both signal and mobile data becomes which can only negatively impact economic growth in these areas.
“Ultimately the cost of living outside of big urban centres is poorer digital infrastructure but the gap is getting much wider and mobile phone operators and broadband providers must aim to reduce this.”
