Scottish Conservative MSP Murdo Fraser, has urged Mid-Scotland and Fife residents to check on elderly friends and family during the current heat wave.
Although temperatures haven’t quite reached the highs experienced during the 2003 heat wave, which is reported to have been responsible for 70,000 deaths across Europe, Murdo believes that residents must remain vigilant to the dangers posed by high summer temperatures.
Due to the infrequent nature of warm weather in Scotland, residents are often unaware of how much food to eat and water to drink when the sun fires up.
Commenting Murdo Fraser MSP said:
“Periods of sustained hot weather are unfortunately all too infrequent in Scotland and when they do arrive they catch elderly residents off guard. I would encourage residents in Perthshire, Stirling, Fife and Clackmannanshire to check on elderly neighbours, friends and family to make sure that they are keeping hydrated and protected from the sun.
“The old and the very young are most at risk from suffering the ill-effects of over exposure to the sun, therefore I would like to encourage everyone to drink enough water when out enjoying the sun.
“Furthermore, I would encourage all sun worshippers to apply a healthy dose of sun cream to avoid nasty burns that can unfortunately lead to skin cancer.
“Ultimately, I hope everyone can get out and enjoy the warm weather but do so in a responsible manner.”
