In a speech in London today, BT Chief Executive Gavin Patterson announced BT will work with the UK Government to introduce a minimum broadband speed of between 5 and 10 Mbps across all homes.
Murdo Fraser MSP has welcomed this commitment and a pledge to go further than the UK Government’s commitment to provide 95% of homes with superfast fibre broadband.
The Mid-Scotland and Fife MSP has urged the UK Government to work closely with BT and other broadband providers to implement both these pledges. He has also called for more to be done by both the UK and Scottish Governments, including an expansion of the rural broadband fund.
Mid-Scotland and Fife MSP Murdo Fraser said:
“These commitments are good news for the people in Perth and Kinross, Fife, Stirling and Clackmannanshire who are still suffering from poor broadband speeds.
“Without much needed investment and initiatives like these, rural areas risk getting left behind by the current lack of decent broadband.
“But more needs to be done and that is why my party is calling for an expansion of the rural broadband fund, to allow individuals and businesses to bid for government money to improve broadband in their area.”
