Blairgowrie Police Station is to lose its public counter service as part of Police Scotland cost cutting reforms.
Residents and local stakeholders had hoped that Police Scotland would revise its initial judgement and keep the counter open but they have confirmed that the counter will close.
Commenting Mid-Scotland and Fife MSP Murdo Fraser said: “It is extremely disappointing that Police Scotland have chosen to go ahead with this closure. Despite hearing many experts rail against the proposal, they have decided to press on regardless.
“Blairgowrie residents expect better but have now lost the chance to interact with their local officers. There is no doubt in my mind that this is a backwards step that will do nothing to improve the safety of our streets.
“Many local residents will be angered at this decision and genuine fears have arisen over the station’s future. Losing Blairgowrie Police Station would be a major blow and Police Scotland must publicly commit to its future.
“The centralised agenda of Police Scotland is failing rural residents and the single force must strengthen its current community policing initiatives.”
Blairgowrie and Glens Cllr Caroline Shiers said:
“For Blairgowrie and Glens residents who have benefited from a proactive and engaged community policing team, this move will come as a major blow.
“The loss of a public service counter at Blairgowrie police station will essentially spell the end of an open and accessible police force in the town. Policing is such an important service and we need to ensure access for everyone. Not everyone in our community is comfortable using computers or waiting for the 101 call to be answered. There is a concern expressed by many local people that the reduction in support staff will lead to officers being tied to desks instead of being out in our communities doing the job they are there to do.
“We have seen so many changes in the community officers, for a number of reasons, over the past year and I have sought assurances from Police Scotland that there is a meaningful commitment to community policing in the Blairgowrie area so that we can continue to enjoy the low levels of crime and feelings of security which we enjoy at the moment. I have appreciated the establishment of links with the community Sergeant and Inspector and look forward to working with them over the coming months."
