Findings from Audit Scotland have shown that attainment levels in Fife secondary schools are below the national average, and Murdo Fraser MSP believes that they must do better.
Only 6 council areas in Scotland performed worse than Fife when it came to the percentage of S4 pupils achieving five awards at level five.
Similarly there was also a large attainment gap between different schools in Fife, and the report also showed the area to be below the national average when it came to improvement over the last ten years.
Commenting Mid-Scotland and Fife MSP Murdo Fraser said:
“The Scottish Government is continuing to fail pupils in Scotland’s poorest areas and they must do more in Fife to lower the gap between top schools and those that are underperforming.
“The SNP have had 7 years to reduce the attainment gap and these latest statistics underline what little progress they have made.
“Reducing the gap between schools should be the Scottish Government’s number one priority, but yet again we are seeing only minimal progress.
“We should have an education system that offers pupils the same chance to learn and achieve regardless of their backgrounds but it is still failing many of our poorest pupils.
“To drive up standards we must look again at the system itself and give parents in Fife more choice and head teachers greater autonomy.”
