A9 road safety campaigner and MSP for Mid-Scotland and Fife, Murdo Fraser, has expressed his condolences to the family and friends of the three motorists killed on an accident on the A9 on Tuesday evening.
A further three motorists were badly hurt and are said to be in a stable condition in hospital.
Although the cause of the crash has yet to be identified, it appears to be a head on collision involving two British registered cars and a German registered vehicle.
Accidents on the A9 tend to spike over the summer months as the road is hit by an influx of tourists travelling to the Highlands who are unaware of the confusing nature of the road due to switches between single and dual carriageway.
Commenting Murdo Fraser MSP said:
“Once again the A9 has played host to another terrible tragedy, and my thoughts and prayers are with the family and friends of those who have lost their lives.
“Although the details of Tuesday evening’s crash are at this stage unknown, it must be noted that this incident took place on a single carriageway stretch of road. I do not believe that this is a simple coincidence, the confused configuration of the A9 leads to far too many accidents.
“Accidents follow a similar pattern on the A9, with the summer witnessing a spike in collisions due to the influx of tourists with little knowledge of the road and the dangers it poses.
“It is extremely sad to see three innocent lives taken on this road again and reinforces the need for changes to be made to prevent future heartbreak. I hope the Scottish Government is listening and we see the A9 dualled before 2025.”
