Six former NFUS Presidents, nine former Vice-Presidents and a former chair of Quality Meat Scotland have backed the Better Together campaign and remaining part of the UK.
Amongst those to confirm their support are Alyth’s former NFUS President and Vice-President, Sir Ian Grant, who has also questioned the SNP’s plans on currency and taxation.
As part of the UK, Scottish farmers have free and open access to a home market of more than 63 million customers and are represented at the top table during international negotiations in Brussels. They also benefit from a massive international diplomatic network that helps open new markets for quality Scottish produce.
Last week Yes Scotland announced that 4 former NFUS chiefs were backing separation.
Commenting Murdo Fraser MSP said:
“It is encouraging to see so many former Presidents and Vice Presidents of the NFUS come out and support the campaign to keep Scotland part of the UK.
“It is my firm belief that rural Scotland and our farmers are better supported as part of the United Kingdom. Farming is a key Scottish industry and has benefited from the support generated as a result of EU membership under UK terms.
“Perth and Kinross, Fife, Stirling and Clackmannanshire have a diverse and successful farming industry which has thrived as part of an integrated market.
“It will not be lost on many farmers that here we have sixteen farming leaders backing our place in the UK, in contrast to only four who could be mustered by the SNP. A recent poll of Scottish farmers suggested that 72% back Scotland’s place in the UK compared to just 10% favouring separation.
“Many local farmers will be aware of Sir Ian Grant from Alyth, a very well respected industry leader over many years. It is encouraging to see someone like Ian showing his support for the Better Together Campaign.”
